The magic of believing is that belief can transform your life in a heartbeat. That transformation can be for the better or worse, depending on the nature of the belief itself, so in this post I will look at how beliefs affect your life and provide a few hints on how to make sure your beliefs are helping to create good things for you.
In this context, a belief can be described as ‘an attitude or opinion that you are certain about’. You should note that being certain about something doesn’t necessarily mean that it is factually true, but if you are certain about that thing you will act as if it were true. For example, if you believe that you are about to be fired, you would probably start looking for another job, even if the belief is based on nothing but a malicious rumour. Of course, if you believe that you are about to be promoted, you would probably experience a greater amount of pride and confidence when working.
From this, you should understand that your current beliefs are actually influencing your actions, and those actions are changing your reality in one way or the other. If you have positive beliefs about your potential and your future, you will be taking actions that help you to reach that potential and create the best possible future. But if you have negative beliefs (or what people refer to as doubts) about your potential and your future, you might just as easily go into hiding, which makes creating good things extremely difficult!
One very powerful way to change your life for the better is by identifying your negative beliefs and then replacing them with positive ones. This is similar to the approach you took when developing the positive attitude habit, but here you are focusing on beliefs, so you need to invest a little more effort.
Start by examining your beliefs about yourself and life in general and write down any belief that is at all negative. For example, if you believe that you are lazy, unattractive, accident-prone or unadventurous, write those beliefs down.
Next, identify the beliefs that you would prefer to have instead of the old ones you have just written down. For example, you could believe that you are capable to achieving incredible things, or that you really are an adventurous person at heart. These new beliefs will feel awkward at first, but that is only because they are new, so don’t hold yourself back here.
The third and final step is to start ACTING AS IF your new beliefs were already in place. In other words, start living your life as if your new beliefs were as certain as the law of gravity. The phrase ‘fake it until you make it’ applies here, and your job is to resist the temptation to revert back to your negative beliefs.
If you can ACT AS IF for 30 days or more, your new beliefs will soon feel as natural and factual as your old ones did! At that point you won’t be faking, and you will automatically start acting in accordance with them. When that happens, watch out, because your life conditions will start improving beyond all recognition…
