Turning Negatives into Positives
The aim of most people who study and work with the Law of Attraction and other metaphysical principles is to turn apparently negative attitudes, situations and circumstances into positives. For example, a person might want to turn debt into wealth, sickness into health, a bad relationship into a good one, or a dissatisfying job into a career that rewards them on every possible level.
Unfortunately, many people make three fundamental mistakes when trying to turn negatives into positives, and unless those mistakes are highlighted and avoided, achieving success with the Law of Attraction or any other metaphysical system will always be an uphill struggle. Here then, are the three mistakes which are commonly made, and how to avoid them…
Focusing on the Negative
The first mistake that people commonly make is focusing on the negative condition they want to change. For example, a person who wants to get out of debt may spend most of their time thinking about the debt and thereby continue to sustain that debt situation (albeit unconsciously) with their energy. The way to avoid this scenario is to focus on the positive that you do want rather than on the negative that you don’t – on abundance instead of wealth, on health instead of sickness, and so on.
Resisting the Negative
Closely associated with the mistake of focusing squarely on the negative is resisting the negative. Resisting anything is really just an oblique way of focusing on it, so even if you have a personal mantra which goes “I will not give in to negativity!” you are still making negativity your point of focus. You can avoid this mistake by simply allowing your life to unfold naturally in each and every moment, without judging whether something is desirable or undesirable. The moment you stop resisting the negative is the moment you begin to short-circuit its existence.
Focusing on the Future
Even if you focus on positive things, if you mentally place them somewhere in the future then that is where they will remain. To manifest changes in the here and now you need to think about them as if there were already in the here and now. In other words, don’t visualize yourself experiencing wealth in the future, but work on developing feelings of wealth and abundance right now, whatever your situation. Master this simple (yet admittedly challenging) principle and you will unlock the power of the Law of Attraction in your life like never before.
Be At Cause Over Life
The universe in general works on the basis of cause and effect, but most people live their lives ‘at effect’, which means that they are in the habit of reacting to life as it happens. A far better way to live is ‘at cause’, and when you are in that mode of living you have a much greater sense of control over your day to day experience. That said, how does one shift to being at effect to at cause over life?
First, take responsibility for your life. Understand that your life right now is largely the effect of causes that you have previously set in motion, either consciously or unconsciously. An example of conscious cause is a previous decision to get married, which might mean that you now have a husband or wife, for better or worse. An example of an unconscious cause is a failure to work sufficiently hard at a job, which might have resulted in you losing your position. In both cases, a specific cause has led to a definite effect. The effects of our causes might appear instantly, or they may take decades to show themselves (making them more difficult to identify), but they are certain to manifest eventually.
With the understanding that your current life is largely the product of causes that you have previously set in motion, you should now start creating causes which are likely to bring desirable future effects. If you want more success in your career then you can work harder or more creatively. If you want to improve your relationships then you can set causes into motion that will lead to better communication, trust and so on. By thinking of the effects that you want to experience in the future, you can focus on setting the appropriate causes in motion today .
If you experience a situation that you don’t like, try to trace it back to the cause so that you can avoid causing the same situation again. For example, if your car gets a flat tyre when driving you might realise that you hadn’t checked the pressures for a long while. You can then make sure that you check your tyre pressures more often in future, which will reduce the chances of you experiencing a flat tyre for the same reason in the future.
Even if you find yourself in a situation which you believe is completely out of your control (for example, your employer going out of business or your neighbourhood being hit by a natural disaster) you can still be at cause by taking complete control of how you react to your circumstances. Someone who is at effect would accept the role of victim, and therefore set very poor causes in motion for the future. You, however, can maintain your position of being at cause by dealing with the situation as effectively and constructively as you know how.
When you are at cause over life, your experience each day becomes a very useful feedback device. Your situation today is a result of your previous causes, so if you are delighted with today you should continue putting similar causes in motion for tomorrow. However, if you aren’t so happy with your experiences today then you can start creating a better tomorrow by taking control and changing the causes that you create.
In life, you have two choices. You can be at effect, which is how the majority of people live their lives, or you can be at cause over life. Your decision in this matter is itself a cause which determines how fulfilling your life will be in the weeks, months and years ahead, so choose wisely!
Chanting for Benefits
The term ‘chanting for benefits’ refers to the act of chanting a phrase repeatedly so that one can obtain some kind of benefit. Chanting is something that is taught in many spiritual traditions, and whilst the benefits are often described in non-tangible terms, some schools encourage their members to chant for tangible benefits too.
Adherents of Nichiren Buddhism advocate Diamoku (chanting ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’) and say that it can bring a great many benefits regardless of whether one believes in the power of chanting or not. Indeed, many followers of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism started out with nothing but the willingness to give chanting a try, and were so impressed with the positive effects they experienced from the practice that they later embraced Nichiren Buddhism as a whole.
Those of you who are looking for a religious or philosophical framework for living a happy and productive life may well be interested in exploring Nichiren Buddhism from the outset. In that case you will find many resources on the internet – simply visit a search engine and perform a search on “Nichiren Buddhism” for starters. The Soka Gakkai International or SGI is the biggest lay organisation in Nichiren Buddhism but there are also plenty of independent Nichiren Buddhists who practice privately without joining any organisation, so do explore all of the possibilities before deciding which, if any, interests you the most.
Of course, many of you may not be interested in pursuing Nichiren Buddhism at all at this time, but in that case you can still enjoy the benefits of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. What those benefits will be is something that every person must discover for themselves. Some have chanted for – and received – new jobs, cars, homes, seemingly miraculous solutions to money and/or health problems and even new life partners, to name just a few of the tangible benefits that have been reported. Then there are intangible benefits such as peace of mind, inner strength, a more positive outlook and greater levels of courage, wisdom and compassion.
Can the simple act of chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo really bring all of these benefits and even more? Our advice is to try it and see. Diamoku costs nothing more than an open mind a little of your time, and we think you will be very surprised at just how powerful chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo can be.
